Breakfast at Kims Skateboard Mosaic

This skateboard mosaic was done using smalti Italian glass with skin tones, blacks glass for the woman and her little black dress. The Tiffany jewelry is made with rounded white Carrara marble, mirror and silver smalti glass. the beautiful background was made with a industrial tile and smalti all sharing the Tiffany blue in common. The client for this piece loves the movie Breakfast at Tiffany's. I waited a while to make this piece as I was having a hard time relating to an image that you see mostly on posters in college dorms. My desire to connect the client to the mosaic in a deeper level was a constant weight on my mind until I came up with a link. The client is not a New Yorker and like all New Yorkers we all want to fit in. In the book Breakfast at Tiffany's , the main protagonist, Holly says that if she ever finds a place where she can feel as great as she feels when she steps into Tiffanys the she would furnish her apartment and give her cat a name.  I have know Kim the client for a few years and I know that she feels now like a New Yorker so I wanted to put her likeness in the image  but since the person in the image has very big sunglasses, this person could be just about any brunette. Kim's love of red wine is noted with the paper cup that the girl holds while she gazes at the viewer. It is full of red wine. Kim's 2 children who are always in her mind are represented above her head as 2 circling nebulas. This skateboard was recycled and it had scuffs from someone who gave it good use. I love the fact that these skateboards have been part of some one's skate journey and taking a new life with the old soul of the skateboard attached to it. We had a party at Kim's house to unveil this piece and people absolutely loved it. I am sure this will grace her house fore many years and will be passed on to the children of her children. The board was donated to me by KCDC skate shop in Brooklyn, New York. Those guys are very nice, be sure to step in there and get your skate gear from them.
